Chart Formats I Use

Few astrologers use three different kinds of astrology when the consult for clients, or research. Some do, yes, but there aren’t many of us.

Not every person visiting this web site wants to see the nuts and bolts of the astrologies I use, but — again — some do. For those of you who do, here are what the three basic charts I use look like, and how I've made them web-friendly.

This is the Jyotish chart — Vedic astrology from India:

The South Indian chart looks just like this, and is very web-friendly. This box-like chart is constructed from characters found in the standard ASCII set and are also found in the Unicode set.

The glyphs for the planets are available from the Unicode set, but I’ve chosen not to use them — they look awful. The glyph for Mars in particular is a tiny, insipid thing:

I use three-letter abbreviations for the planets instead:

SUN = Sun
MON = Moon
Mer = Mercury
Ven = Venus
Mar = Mars
Jup = Jupiter
Sat = Saturn
ura = Uranus
nep = Neptune
plu = Pluto
Rah = Rahu (North Node of the Moon)
Ket = Ketu (South Node of the Moon)
ASC = Ascendant

Since I regard the Sun, Moon and Ascendant as the most important points in the Vedic chart, they are all-capitalized and in bold print. Jyotish traditionally considers the nodes of the Moon to have almost the rank of planets. While they don't rule any of the signs, they are given rulership over time lord periods. They are capitalized, as are the classical planets.

In my personal opinion, modern astrology makes a serious mistake when it comes to the outer planets; Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. They may be extremely important, but they aren’t supremely important. One big mistake is giving them sign rulerships.

The outer planets do not rule signs. This is a historical mistake: Uranus does not rule Aquarius, Neptune does not rule Pisces, and Pluto does not rule Scorpio. If, as Robert Schmidt of Project Hindsight contends, that the outer planets are transcendental, then giving them sign rulerships tosses their transcendental nature into the trash. To ridiculously overstate the case, assigning the rulership of Aquarius to Uranus is like assigning sushi to Irish cuisine because potatoes are “Irish” and because rice and potatoes are both carbohydrates. You don’t use modern nutritional analysis to assign ethnic dishes to ethnic cuisines, and you shouldn’t assign a non-visible planet to rule a classical sign.

The outer planets should be included, but I do not capitalize the abbreviations for them.

Another reason to keep the classical planetary rulerships is because the South Indian Jyotish chart shows them off so beautifully:

The signs are never written in the South Indian Jyotish chart because we don’t have to: each sign is always placed in the same place. Anyway, the signs ruled by the planets are symmetrically placed around the Cancer/Leo and Capricorn/Aquarius axis. The signs ruled by the lights are placed on the right:
